GOOD MORNING, UPPER VALLEY!

And welcome back to CoffeeBreak. This is the stand-in for Daybreak until Aug. 23—just a playful little diversion until the grownup version returns.Plus a heads up: Next week's CoffeeBreaks will come out about an hour later than usual. Just a little experiment.Well, it's Friday, so obviously it's time for Lost Woods. I'll be as curious as you are to see what the crew's up to. In case you're a new reader, every week Lebanon author and illustrator DB Johnson (Henry Hikes to Fitchburg and other classics) chronicles the doings in Lost Woods. Scroll right to move on to the next panel or left to catch up on previous weeks. If you've missed a week (or more), check out the archive and synopsis behind the three little parallel lines at the top right. And it's also time for the News Quiz. Each Friday, Hanover's Kevin McCurdy and Bill Miles test your knowledge of what's gone on around the region that week—and ask your opinion on a burning question or two. Usually I'm pretty decent at this, but now that I'm not publishing Daybreak for a bit, I'm a muggle. How about something to keep you occupied through the weekend? Just a few weeks ago, at the end of June, NPR launched an app called the "Joy Generator." The idea, basically, is to help you get out of your head, using a set of audio and video clips grouped around a theme ("The Power of Cute," "Call of the Wild")... Here's NPR's Michaeleen Doucleff on the thinking and the brain science behind it. But you can ignore all that and play around at the maroon link. To navigate any particular theme, hit the arrow at the bottom right of your screen. To see them all, hit "Menu" at the top right, then "Browse all stories."

Of course, this'll get you out of your head, too. We're going to go out with two pieces of music today. Or actually, the same piece of music two very different ways. The first is the original "Uptown Funk," the mega-hit song by Mark Ronson and performed by Bruno Mars, only the jaw-droppingly clever video that goes along with it matches it to dance scenes from classic movies (Thanks, DM!) Then there's the version that the compelling Ayoub Sisters, the Glasgow-born daughters of Egyptian-immigrant parents, did with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra... and yes, that's Ronson who wanders in about midway through. See you Monday.

If you'd like to unsubscribe from CoffeeBreak—but not from Daybreak—hit the button just below. It will generate an email to me asking to take you off the CoffeeBreak list. If you use the "unsubscribe from this list" link down at the bottom, that will remove you from the entire Daybreak list.
