And welcome to CoffeeBreak. This is the stand-in for Daybreak until Aug. 23—just a playful little diversion until the grownup version returns. "Wait, you paid how much for a gallon of mountain lion urine?" That was the eye-catching headline on an NYT graphic a while back: "The price of 46 random liquids by the gallon." This was just before the pandemic hit, so you've gotta wonder what's happened since. Camel's milk? $144. Chanel No. 5? $7,491.84. CBD oil? $15,872. Vermont maple syrup? No, not in the six figures. It was only $119.80.... But seriously, they paid that much in NYC?Meanwhile, here's what's going on in the woods this second week of August. Amazing how much changes from week to week, isn't it? Last week, jewelweed was starting to bloom and chanterelles were emerging. This week? Northern Woodlands' Elise Tillinghast will tell us. There are so many reasons not to wear a helmet when you're riding: It makes your scalp itch...plays hell with your braids...and the English guy coming at you with a broadsword might not take you seriously. A couple of months ago, the Danish Road Safety Council dropped a pro-helmet PSA that opens up whole new avenues for Viking humor.
Oh man, now here's a voice. Scary Pockets, an LA funk band, brings in Maiya Sykes and Ben Folds to do a mashup of Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind" and Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop.” You can't possibly still be sitting still...See you Friday.
