GOOD MORNING, UPPER VALLEY!
Things will start out partly cloudy, but clear as the day goes on. We're in for a quiet day and a half before the weather gets more playful late tomorrow. Temps starting in the 20s, rising into the high 30s or low 40s by mid-afternoon. Gusty winds from the west. Back into the 20s tonight. Elaine Brown to go free Feb. 28. Brown, who is 78 and has served a dozen years in prison for her role in the 2007 armed standoff with federal marshals at her and her husband's compound in Plainfield, was re-sentenced to "time served" in federal court on Friday. Judge George Singal said he believes that Brown "was deeply repentant, had rehabilitated herself and would not be a risk to the public," the AP reports. Ed Brown is still awaiting a re-sentencing hearing.L.F. Trottier & Sons selling business to Texas company. The family-owned John Deere tractor dealership, with locations in both South Royalton and Hartland (after picking up from its longtime WRJ location in 2015), expects to close the sale March 31. Larry Trottier told employees Friday that the buyer intends to keep all 19 employees. "The handwriting is on the wall," Trottier explained to the VN's John Lippman. "We’re just one small dealership.” Patch NH's statewide real estate eye candy of the week: a $2.2 million home on River Road in Lyme. 21 acres, a thousand feet of river frontage, five bathrooms. You suppose that little telescope comes with the place?Former Dartmouth football coach Callie Brownson named Cleveland Browns chief of staff. Brownson became the first female full-time Div. I football coach when Buddy Teevens hired her as his offensive quality control coach for the 2018 season. She joined the Buffalo Bills last year, and now Browns coach Kevin Stefanski wants to propel her toward the top. "She...has a great knowledge of the game and I want to let her expand that knowledge and develop her as a head coach," he says in a team news release.SPONSORED: Bet you didn't know Gérard Depardieu could play the viola da gamba! That's because he can’t. But Jordi Savall really can, and his passionate, honeyed sounds on that cello-like instrument are what we hear while Depardieu saws away in the 1991 film Tous Les Matins du Monde. The soundtrack sold millions, winning fans for Renaissance music and making Savall a Yo-Yo Ma of “early music.” He remains an exquisite, prolific gamba player, ensemble leader, and scholar (he’s uncovered countless forgotten musical gems), as he’ll demonstrate in Thursday's Hop concert with his choice group of singers and musicians. Sponsored by the Hop.Mink Brook flyover. William Daugherty had his drone out over Hanover a few days ago, following the brook's curves. Yeah, he did something like that last week in Plainfield — but how many times have you seen Hanover's wastewater treatment plant from above? He also, by the way, spent some time flying over Hartford Rec's youth ice-fishing derby on Dewey's Pond on Saturday.Ever wanted to indulge your inner movie mogul? A "psychological thriller" called Grafton starts shooting in Grafton, VT next month. It stars The Blair Witch Project's Michael Williams and Reality Therapy's Katherine Partington, and is trying to raise Kickstarter money. It's about "a woman who gets lost on the interstate and comes across a small town where she reluctantly assumes the identity of someone else." I-91? I'm sure we can all relate.NH legislature tries again on net metering. Last year, lawmakers moved to expand the size of an allowable net metering project (a solar array attached to the electric grid) to allow municipalities and commercial users to take advantage of the program. Gov. Sununu vetoed it. Now, the House has amended a Senate bill to move it closer to what Sununu wanted, and the Senate last week agreed by voice vote. It will become law unless Sununu vetoes it; no indication yet where he stands.Vermont AG's office used DCF files to vet jurors in Woodstock trial. The case, in Windsor County civil court, charges the state's Dept for Children and Families with failing to protect two Ludlow children from abuse. The AG's office, which is defending the state agency, "accessed information about unsubstantiated reports of child abuse and neglect involving potential jurors," report VTDigger's Ellie French and Colin Meyn. The state's defender general, Matt Valerio, says this may have broken the law.Scott vetoes paid family leave bill. No sooner had Vermont's Democrat-led legislature pulled together to pass a measure both houses could agree upon (a feat they couldn't manage in 2019), the guv axed it. He wants a voluntary medical and family leave program, instead. The Senate version passed with enough votes to override, but the Jan. 23 House vote was 89-58, and the body needs 100 votes to make it law. Speaker Mitzi Johnson says they'll try this week. They're everywhere. You know how it seems like you can't drive anywhere in New England without passing a Dunkin' Donuts? Looks like you can't head out on the ice to play pond hockey, either...
