From Jay Cary in Lyme, NH: “This is a longtailed giant ichneumonid wasp which I photographed recently before it laid its eggs in one of our maple trees. It is a parasitic wasp, and that long tail is its ovipositor, not a stinger. It has the uncanny ability to tell which borer hole in the maple tree has a larva in it.”
