GOOD MORNING, UPPER VALLEY!

It's going to be a beautiful day, until it's not. Partly sunny, highs in the high 70s. And then at some point this afternoon winds will turn to the east-southeast, and moisture will move in from the Atlantic. A chance of scattered showers after that lasting through tonight. And tomorrow. And, well, Saturday. And... oh, forget it.Over two dozen arrested at Hartford immigration rally. Some 200 protesters, brought out by recent Border Patrol sweeps and Hartford's roiling debate over sharing information with federal agents, blocked traffic by town hall for nearly two hours yesterday afternoon and evening. "Despite a non-stop stream of protest chants and the occasional song, the loud scene remained mostly civil," Eric Francis reports. Many photos. If you use FB, long video here. The rally came amid news of sweeps in the area by border agents. Tuesday morning, Rise! Upper Valley, the group organizing yesterday's immigration rally in Hartford, put out a notice that nine immigrants had been detained in Hartford. The VN's Jordan Cuddemi looked into it . Cuddemi was told by a Border Patrol spokesman that 18 people were arrested July 31-Aug. 1, though it's unclear exactly where. Activists say several were construction workers swept up at the McDonald's and the Super 8 in Hartford. The Hartford and Leb PDs say they were not involved. (VN, sub reqd)Harvey Frommer and Myrna Katz Frommer, Lyme residents, authors, and Dartmouth profs, died a week apart almost to the hour. The Boston Globe has a joint obit, covering Harvey's prolific baseball writing – books about the Yankees, the Red Sox, Shoeless Joe Jackson, and dozens of others – and Myrna and Harvey's oral histories. Buddy Teevens and crew could remake football, says ESPN. Not just Dartmouth football, but the game itself, from youth leagues to the NFL. Starting with no live tackling in practice, a robotic dummy now showing up on other campuses and NFL fields, and the only full-time Div. I female coach. "What football might be -- what the future of this game might look like one day soon; what it might have to look like -- could be shaped here, in this tiny hamlet, at this Ivy League institution, with this non-tackling, woman-hiring, next-big-idea-having troupe of insurgents," writes Hallie Grossman with brio on ESPN.com. (Thanks for the tip, MT!)UV snags part of $7.9 million in federal grants. The money comes from the Northern Border Regional Commission and is going to 18 towns and organizations for job creation, infrastructure, and community development. The Southern Windsor County Incubator in Springfield landed $235K, and Randolph is getting $450K to improve the town water system.NH wants to raise speed limits on Route 120. Residents have asked that the limit be lowered, but after conducting speed studies, the state believes exactly the opposite should happen. Drivers decide how fast to go based on traffic, road conditions, weather and whether there’s a perceived police presence -- not the sign -- state traffic engineer William Lambert tells Lebanon, Plainfield and Cornish. And on many sections of 120, they tend to go faster than the posted limit, so it's time to raise the limit. The towns are fighting the move. (VN)Remember DS Tuc Ab, the young exoplanet discovered by a team led by a Dartmouth prof? Elizabeth Newton, the team leader, explains how they found it and why it matters. “By finding solar systems that are different from our own—especially young ones—we can hope to learn why Earth and our own solar system evolved in the ways that they did," she says.Unless you're headed to the Trump rally in Manchester NH, you might want to avoid the city this afternoon. But if you do have to go, here's what you need to know.NH is only state outside South, West in top 10 for where millennials are moving. A new study of Census data by Smart Asset shows their top choices are Washington (and particularly Seattle), Texas, and Colorado. That's for net in-migration, ie, millennials moving in vs. millennials moving out – the highest absolute influx was to California, Texas, Florida, and New York. In all, NH netted 6,719 -- a decent number, but not enough to keep it from being the second oldest state in the country.VT begins releasing results of lead studies in child care centers, schools. A new state law requires that every tap used for drinking or cooking be tested, and the state has finished with 300 child care centers and five schools out of the 1,200 centers and 440 schools that will ultimately be tested. It's created an online dashboard (at the link) where you can find results.Nature Conservancy trying to make VT's "the most wildlife-friendly statewide transportation system in the nation." For the last two years, it's been studying how moose, deer, bears, coyotes, fishers, foxes and other wildlife get across the state's roads. In particular, researchers want to understand how the state can improve culverts, bridges and other structures to help animals avoid becoming roadkill. Turns out bobcats avoid culverts with water. Hooved animals won't cross rivers with large rocks. THERE'S SO MUCH TO DO TONIGHT...For starters, you could go hear Lyn Swett at AVA Gallery in Lebanon talking about “Climate Joy: How Creativity and Climate Action can Inspire Joy and New Ways of Being.” The Hanover-based photographer has been using compost as both her subject and an inspiration. “I thought: how is it that something perceived as messy, smelly garbage is really so beautiful?” she told the VN a few days ago. “This is redemption. This is what life is about." Starts at 6.Or maybe watch Stand By Me on the side of the beautiful old Unitarian Universalist church in S. Strafford. Four boys in Oregon head off to find a dead body one of them heard his older brother talking about. Adventures and growing up ensue. The screening's free, but you might pony up for some popcorn and lemonade to support the church's building fund. Starts after dusk -- figure 8-ish. Or you could head up the road a bit to the Strafford Town House for Major Jackson and Didi Jackson. The third of this year's Strafford Town House forums features the two UVM profs and poets talking (and reading) poetry. Good timing: This happens to be a few weeks before the 2019 edition of The Best American Poetry, which Major Jackson edited this year, comes out. Starts at 7.Meanwhile, Feast & Field in Barnard has Rosier. The Québecois band formerly known as Les Poules à Colin somehow manages to blend indie pop and the traditional music of New France into something they call "folk trad" and make it all sound entirely fresh. Lead singer Béatrix Méthé was born in VT, raised in Quebec by her fiddler father and guitarist/folk-singer mother; she's joined by Sarah Marchand on keyboard and vocals, Éléonore Pitre on guitar, Marie Savoie-Levac on bass, and Colin Savoie-Levac on banjo, mandolin, lap steel guitar and foot percussion. Music starts at 5:30.Finally, you could just hang out on the SoRo Green and help Royalton celebrate its 250th birthday. Food trucks galore, the town band and then Bow Thayer, a walking tour of historic buildings (led by architectural historian Devin Colman at 6 if you don't want to miss it)... Events tomorrow evening and all day Saturday, too."When the NIGHT...has come..."I know, it's been bouncing around in my head, too. Here's Ben E King's 1961 classic. See you tomorrow.
