Reporters both locally and in the twin states at large have been busy over the last few weeks covering both the big-ticket contests and down-ballot races for legislature, county sheriff, and more. This is not an exhaustive guide (which would be exhausting to read), but it does aim to point you to journalists’ work that may be useful in sorting out what’s going on where you live.
Upper Valley
To get your local bearings, one good place to start is the Valley News’s political coverage. You’ll find it all here. In particular, the paper’s staff writers have been doing something no other NH news source has done: give a sense of the issues and the candidates in a slew of Sullivan County and Grafton County legislative contests—as well as offering coverage of contested races on the Vermont side of the region. Check the link above for more coverage this week, but in the meantime, you’ll find stories about:
VT House:
Windsor-Orange-1 (Royalton, Tunbridge)
Windsor-1 (Hartland, Windsor)
Windsor-4 (Hartford, Pomfret)
Orange-Caledonia (Newbury, Topsham and Groton)
Orange 2: (Fairlee, Bradford)
NH House:
Grafton 6 (Orford, Rumney, Wentworth)
Grafton 9 (Orange, Dorchester, Canaan)
Grafton 18 (Dorchester, Enfield, Canaan, Grafton, Groton)
Sullivan 2 (Cornish, Plainfield)
Sullivan 3 (Newport, Charlestown)
Sullivan 6 (Claremont, Croydon)
Sullivan 7 (Plainfield, Newport, Unity, Charlestown)
Sullivan 8 (Croydon, Claremont)
NH Senate
District 5 (western Grafton and Sullivan counties, and a bit of Merrimack)
NH Exec Council District 2
Meanwhile, both The Herald and The VT Standard have been focusing on contests in the White River Valley and greater Woodstock area, respectively.
The Herald’s “Meet the Candidates” guide pulls together candidates’ responses to the paper’s questionnaires for Orange County assistant judges, Orange County sheriff, the Orange Senate district, the Windsor County assistant judges, Windsor County sheriff, the Windsor Senate district, and a range of Windsor County House seats.
In addition, The Herald has done articles on:
The House race between Kirk White and Michael White in Windsor-Addison
The candidates looking to rebuild the Orange County sheriff’s office
The Orange-1 House race between incumbent Mike Tagliavia (R) and Gregory Wilson (D)
The Standard, for its part, has done:
New Hampshire
For coverage of the contests for federal office and governor:
NHPR has a page that rounds up both its individual stories (from coverage of elections officials to debates between candidates to NHPR hosts’ conversations with individual candidates) as well as links to coverage of how candidates differ on particular issues such as health care reform and education funding. You’ll find it all here.
New Hampshire Bulletin has a series of voter guides with links to its own stories and candidates’ websites for the US Senate, two US Houses races, and gubernatorial contest.
The Union Leader’s “Voters First” page offers links to its coverage of debates and individual candidates.
And for the state legislature, Citizens Count has a rundown of each Senate district and each House district, with the towns they contain and capsule descriptions of each candidate.
Vermont
You’ll find articles and coverage from:
